Job Tips – Starting your online job search – Part 1

You are reading this article either due to a layoff, career shift or you are simply checking out you options in the job market at this point in your career.

What I hope to clearly cover and explain is the initial steps in starting an online job search and an initial overview of using the tools available on the web today.

The tools and resources you need to start with are as follows:

1)   Your Resume.  Well written and in a format you can post online.

2)   Letters of reference and recommendation.

3)   A Computer with Internet access.

4)   Basic computer and web browsing knowledge.

5)   An Email account – preferably in the format yourname
(at) anydomain.com

Initially, you may want to check out online sites like LinkedIn and Facebook.  If you are unfamiliar with these sites, I strongly suggest you get familiar with them and others like them; this aspect is covered in many other articles online.

In addition, there are a number of Job Search Resource sites online such as this site: http://www.JobSearchResource.net , that have the job search boards readily available, a simple mouse click away.

You will want to create a Job Search Plan.  You also will need to be clear about what you are looking for in the area of work, pay, location and hours.  In addition you need to consider how to best ‘sell yourself’ online.

The aspect of selling yourself goes deep into how the resume is crafted, written, setup and presented to the viewer.  Remember we are not ‘mass marketing’ here.  We want to shoot with a laser and the previous site mentioned above has numerous resources, tips, videos, professional consultant advice, books, articles, services and so much more to help you fine tune your methods in performing an online job search.

Now, you want to carefully consider what you do, what you can do and then search for these items through the job search tools and job search boards as mentioned above.   Bookmark, printout and save your results.  Review the results carefully.  Get as much information and you can and ask yourself ‘am I the person for this job?’  The you refine your sales pitch to your prospective employer.  This is done through proper cover letter writing, resume revising and wisdom in communication with the prospective employer among other things.

Please take careful note: Even if you’re the only one applying for the job, and you sell yourself well, doesn’t mean you’ve sold yourself right or are even the one they are looking for.   This is why careful study of the whole process is critical – the company, the job, the employers, even the employees and your self.  Right now I am speaking about your career field generally.

The next steps are to keep searching every day, consistently.  Get your resume posted properly online in front of the employers that are looking for someone with your skills.

Keep checking email on a regular basis and your cell phone on, but do understand how to pursue each potential employer and have specific patience with them, just persistence with your search throughout the whole process, you do not know who will be the best fit until you go through the interview processes and work things out.

That is all for now.  I’ll be writing more on the various aspects of Job Searching via the Internet in later articles.
